Home Decor Mistakes To Avoid

home decor

Home decor works harmoniously with your space, it is cohesive with the rest of your design, and is curated with intent. However, it’s easy to make mistakes when putting your home’s design together. We’ve collected some of the most common mistakes in home decor, and we’ll show you how to fix them.

Home Decor Pitfalls

While your style is unique, design mistakes are more common than you think. They can also occur in any home design style, whether you’re designing a clean, minimalist interior or a bold, period-inspired home. These design pitfalls are not so much mistakes in design, but mistakes in execution. By being aware of the seven elements of interior design, you can keep your home on-theme and curated with a design-oriented eye.

The Wrong Lighting

Lighting is everything– it’s the atmosphere of our home. The wrong lighting, however, can make your spaces look small, clinical, or in cohesive with the rest of your home’s design.

Lighting also plays a functional role in our homes. Kitchen lighting is brighter, letting you prepare food with ease in a well-lit workspace. Bedroom lighting often learns warmer, being easier on the eyes and setting the tone for the end of the day. Your lighting placement also matters– no one wants a bright, exposed bulb in the corner of their eye while trying to watch TV.

Choose your lighting fixtures, temperature, and placement correctly to create harmonious and functional spaces.

Design Without Scale

The visual appearance of our homes relies on color, texture, and spacing. We need to use both positive and negative space when decorating our homes. If the balance between positive and negative space is off, the scale of a room can feel off.

The size of the furnishings in our home determines their scale. If all of the home accessories on your bookshelf are the same height, the overall impression of the bookshelf will feel flat and uninspired.

Our eyes are drawn to scale and to levels. We need to vary both the size and height of objects, especially in areas where our eyes are drawn. In particular, it’s essential to choose area rugs and wall art that are the correct size for your space. These pieces help to “zone” a given room, and a rug too small or too large can throw off our perception of a space and its design.

Considering scale in design means embracing balance and contrast. We use both to create a space that feels cohesive and designed with intent.

Ignoring Natural Walkways

Our homes must be accessible. Sometimes, we’ll place furniture in a way that feels right but actually makes walking around our homes more difficult.

Each room should be planned out with walkways and line of sight in mind. We recommend keeping clear, simple paths between entry and exit points in a room. Make sure to give yourself space to reach your seating areas without winding between furnishings.

Walkways create flow in your home from the moment you enter through the front door– or with smart design, from the entrance to your front yard. This flow increases cohesiveness and your home decor’s impact.

Underestimating Material Cohesion

There are so many elements that play into home decor cohesion. Color, style, and texture are just the beginning. Sophisticated home interiors balance cohesion and contrast, but just because two items are the same color, it doesn’t mean they’re cohesive.

There’s a balance to be struck when choosing materials like upholstery or wood finishes, as elements like color and texture can work together in multiple ways.

Relying On Trends

Design trends shift from year to year, season to season, and in some cases even month to month. While we love being inspired by current design trends, we don’t recommend overly relying on trends if you want to create an elegant home.

Luxury home decor experiences slower trend shifts, allowing for better production processes, quality checks, and increased sustainability. Overusing what’s “in” can also age your home design much faster than you’d like. However, current trends are a fantastic tool in breaking down your personal aesthetic and deciding what style you want your home decor to follow.

Skimping On Color

There are so many elements that play into home decor cohesion. Color, style, and texture are just the beginning. Sophisticated home interiors balance cohesion and contrast, but just because two items are the same color, it doesn’t mean they’re cohesive.

Underestimating Material Cohesion

Color– or a lack of it– defines a space. Even if you want your home decor to be neutral-toned, you still need a balance of warmth and color to make “all neutral” work.

Colors react against each other, and flooding a room with a specific shade hardly ever works as well as setting up that color against a contrast. This contrast can be the same color in a different hue, a different material offering a break for the eyes, or an entirely new accent color.

Visual intrigue helps us explore a room with our eyes, and setting up a color palette for your home is essential.

Not Investing In Quality Decor

While home renovations can be rushed, you don’t want to sacrifice quality just to get that sofa delivered faster. Quality home decor is made with sturdy materials, by expert hands, and will have varying production times depending on where the artisans work. However, investing in luxury furniture will be much more beneficial in the long run compared to cheaper alternatives that wear down faster over time.

Not Using An Interior Designer

The most common mistake homeowners make is not working with an interior designer to refine their space. Working with an interior designer can help you balance your space in terms of lighting, cohesiveness, and flow, working off of your inspiration and design aesthetic.

There are so many elements of interior design that come into play when creating a sophisticated space. These nuances can be handled by your design team, leaving you free to lead with your design style and specific requirements you have for your home.
